| Ministries :: Mission :: Global Mission |
|
|
God calls us to be a congregation that heeds both the Great Commission ("Go and tell about Jesus Christ!") as well as the Great Commandment ("Love your neighbor!"). In John's gospel (3:16), Jesus reminds us that God loves the world. In Matthew's gospel (25:31-46), Jesus teaches us that when we minister to the hungry, the thirsty, the naked, the sick or the imprisoned, we minister to Jesus, himself. Mission trips permit us to "live out" the call of Jesus Christ in unique ways. There are a number of ways in which we are involved in global missions. We have sent, and continue to send, many on trips around the world. By choosing to go on a mission trip, we invite God to work within us as we ask important questions: "What will you show me, Lord?" "How will you use me?" "How can I make a difference for you?" "What impact will this trip have on how I view my life and your call upon it?" "What might I do as a result of going?"
We also support ministries around the world through prayer and financially. If, in this season of your life, you are unable to travel on a mission trip, we ask that you might consider praying for a mission partner or giving financially to that ministry. Please visit this site to keep updated as we finalize trip dates. |

World Vision- Dominican Republic
NPC has regularly sent teams to the Dominican Republic (November 2003-2010), in partnership with World Vision, to begin and deepen a relationship with brothers and sisters in Christ. Many NPC members have enjoyed building relationships and visiting the children they sponsor. We have also received several visits from our D.R. mission partners, Luis Fragoso and Claudio Done.
Specifically, we are concentrating our efforts in a remote western portion of the country that closely borders Haiti, another nation struggling greatly with poverty. Our shared ministry is in the Restauracion ADP (Area Development Program). We have made a substantial four-prong commitment to our work and ministry:
The building of a critically needed water irrigation system
The building of a library for children and youth
The sponsorship of hundreds of children
The building of 10 homes
We anticipate a long-term, mutual relationship with God's people in the Dominican Republic. One of the primary ways we intend to build bridges is to regularly send mission teams who will invest time and self in getting to know the people and our ministry initiatives, and then, return to NPC to bear witness to what God is allowing our mission giving to accomplish.
These mission trips are more short-term (5-7 days), involve a relatively short flight (about 3 ½ hours), and are within the budget of many. We pray that over the years a number of our members will make a commitment to see for themselves how our partnership in the D.R. fulfills both Great Commissions.
NPC has been developing a relationship with families in the Restauracion area of the DR. If you are interested in sponsoring a child in this area through World Vision please click on this link. |

Nambale Magnet School Kenya
www.nambalemagnet.org
The Nambale Magnet School, founded by the Rev. Evalyn Wakhusama, provides orphans and vulnerable children in Western Kenya with a home, an education and a foundation for the future. The school adapts the “magnet” concept from American public education to a Kenyan context by embracing the notion of a primary school that mixes children from different social strata, giving each child an equal chance to thrive.
The school opened in January 2009 with one class of 35 students. It now has six classes (pre kindergarten through grade four) with 184 students. Eventually it will serve 350 learners, at least half of which will be orphans or vulnerable children. The school is already viewed by the surrounding community as the light on the hill that is raising the hopes of all around it.
NPC has supported the Nambale Magnet School since 2009.
If you are interested in supporting the work of Nambale Magnet School, Kenya or City of Hope School, Tanzania please check out their websites or contact Stella Clarke at stella.clarke@norotonchurch.org |

Teamwork City of Hope’s aim and mission, is to redeem and save young people who have been forgotten by life through unfortunate circumstances. Their dreams have been squashed and broken as AIDS, chronic poverty, illiteracy, and lack of education take their toll. This project is about bringing hope to communities and to nations while changing lives for the better.
Specifically City of Hope is about
- Giving children skills for life through education and training
- Bringing health care to a region that has none
- Building economies through micro-financing and farming
- Transformation of lives
This concept was conceived in the heart of Dr. John N. Chacha. The first TCOH is being built through a partnership with community leaders in western Tanzania. City of Hope is in Ntagatcha village in Western Tanzania, about 45 miles from Lake Victoria, near the border of Kenya.
NPC are supporting City of Hope with funding and some members have visited and served the community on short term mission trips. For more information visit the website or contact NPC Mission Team Liaison Debbie Lang, mailto:dlang3@gmail.com |

Children of Bethlehem - Brazil
At one time the city of Sorocaba in Sao Paulo, Brazil, had one of the highest levels of AIDS-infected children in the world. The ministry of Children of Bethlehem was founded in 1996 to help these children, teenagers and their family members who are directly or indirectly affected by the AIDS virus. The work is performed through a day care center, a shelter, monthly donations of basic food items to the affected families and various in-home services provided by Christian social workers. They also have a very effective outreach to pregnant women affected by AIDS that nearly guarantees that their babies are born HIV-free. The ministry is currently under the direction of Pastor Caio, whose growing church meets on the Children of Bethlehem campus and whose members are actively involved in extending the love of Christ to the children and their families. Since April, 2006, NPC has sent three separate mission teams to Sorocaba to meet the children and their families and to better understand the needs of this vital ministry. |

Forman Christian College - Lahore, Pakistan
Forman Christian College has been an NPC Mission Partner since 2007.
Known as “FC College,” Forman is located in Lahore, Pakistan and was founded in 1864 by Charles Forman, a Presbyterian missionary. It grew to become the most respected institution of higher education in Pakistan and educated many of Pakistan’s government, military and business leaders. The school’s alumni include a president of the U.N. Security Council, a prime minister of India and, for Pakistan, two presidents, a prime minister, the first chief justice, an attorney general and a foreign minister.
The college was nationalized in the 1970’s but in 2003 the government of Pakistan, the second largest Muslim nation in the world , returned to the Presbyterian Church. A former member of NPC, David Stoner, handled the negotiations for the Presbyterian Church.
Under the leadership of an American missionary educator, Dr. Peter Armacost, the college has become a model of interfaith harmony educating Christians and Muslim side by side. Since 2003 the Christians attending the college have grown from 20 students to 830 in a country where only 2% of the population are Christian. The Christian faculty has also grown, from 4 to 72. Of the 188 faculty members, 99 have earned doctorate degrees. Leadership of the college is transitioning from Dr. Armacost, who will retire next year, to Dr. James Tebbe, a U.S. citizen who is a respected Urdu scholar and experienced administrator. Dr Tebbe visited and spoke to NPC members last year.
Forman’s reformation has made a huge impact on the Christian minority in Pakistan. Many of the students are the first members of their families to attend college and they graduate with a solid education and deep understanding of their faith. One theme that is regularly expressed at Forman is the contrast between incoming student, who are often awkward and insecure, and the confident, articulate and secure graduating seniors. Today, Forman is a model of inter-community harmony, where one can witness men and women from different Christian denominations and minority and majority Muslim groups living and learning together.
Our Pastor, Sam Schreiner, is a member of the American Friends of Forman Christian College Board. NPC supports the Forman Christian College scholarship program. For $1,300 you can provide funding for one academic year for one student at Forman, including tuition, room and board, uniform and books.
